Sustainable materials and elements in interior design
It is becoming increasingly important today to use sustainable materials to limit the environmental impact that the planet has suffered in recent years. For this reason, numerous companies have started to produce their construction materials in a sustainable, natural, and recycled manner. Additionally, these elements do not contain toxic substances, come from local sources, and their manufacturing process does not generate a high number of waste.
There are numerous certifications that endorse that a company or product has been manufactured under efficient and sustainable standards. One of the most important is the eco-design certification according to the EN ISO 14006 standard, which ensures that the organization complies with environmental legislation and will continue to improve environmentally over time. This not only results in a significant reduction in costs in their processes but also improves the product and the organization’s image while increasing the durability of their products. Certifications also apply to production processes that reduce environmental impact both through the use of 100% ecological materials and through facilities that minimize energy consumption, for example, by equipping their headquarters with solar panels.
For example, when it comes to reused elements that can be given a second life, we can highlight companies and materials used for wall coverings, ceilings, and, in general, all kinds of surfaces made from reused plastic bottles. Many different and original designs can be achieved, of high quality and with technical functionality, such as sound absorption or increased structural density.
Lighting is a crucial aspect to consider in interior design, and, just as there are finishes or furniture produced sustainably, there are energy-efficient lighting sources that illuminate our homes, offices, restaurants, etc. LED technology, in particular, leads in terms of minimal energy consumption, offering the same lighting quality as a traditional bulb with much higher power. Another positive aspect is the low heat emission of LED technology, resulting in lower air conditioning consumption to cool the spaces. It’s also worth noting that LEDs do not emit gases or toxic substances and have a much longer lifespan than the average traditional lighting source.
